HECR started in 2016 when we saw a great need to help families arriving with nothing more than the clothing on their backs. We reached out to fellow helpers and we began finding donations both financial and physical to help families start a new life with the basic items they need.

Helping Empower Community Refugees (HECR), formerly Helping El Cajon Refugees, is a neighborhood group dedicated to supporting refugee resettlement in San Diego. We are an all volunteer non profit in good standing, EIN 99-1861752.

Meeting Needs as They Change

The needs of our refugee neighbors are always changing, and HECR continues to adapt. From helping asylum seekers get started to supporting refugee families through challenging times, we meet people where they are and provide practical support when it matters most.

Helping Families Feel at Home

A new home is a fresh start. HECR helps families settle in by providing donated furniture, bedding, kitchen essentials, toys, and other household items.

Gently used, like-new donations help turn an empty space into a comfortable home—and give families a sense of belonging as they begin their next chapter.

Food & Essentials Every Wednesday

Every Wednesday, we provide free groceries and diapers to more than 180 families. Community donations also help us provide monthly menstrual products and diaper wipes.

Families can also visit our free table to choose additional items they need.
